Persistent Misconceptions concerning Null Hypothesis Significance Testing
نویسنده
چکیده
ABTRACT The Null Hypothesis Significance Test is a popular testing procedure used mainly in the social sciences and occasionally in the natural sciences. The procedure has been criticized on several grounds. Firstly, opponents have attacked the procedure itself, claiming that it either does not tell the researcher what he or she wants to know; and/or that the procedure is not logically valid. Secondly, opponents argue that the concept of statistical significance is flawed on the ground that is it either too arbitrary or, that statistical significance cannot confer substantive significance. This paper argues that critics of Null Hypothesis Significance Test either lack a proper understanding of how and why the test works, or they apply the test in an incomplete manner.

Problems With Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST): What Do the Textbooks Say?
The first of 3 objectives in this study was to address the major problem with Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST) and 2 common misconceptions related to NHST that cause confusion for students and researchers. The misconceptions are (a) a smaller p indicates a stronger relationship and (b) statistical significance indicates practical importance. The second objective was to determine how ...
متن کاملIdentifying Misconceptions about Confidence Intervals
Although confidence intervals (CIs) have many benefits over null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) they can still be misinterpreted. Identifying CI misconceptions is a first step in designing teaching tools that can be used to prevent or reduce them. I surveyed graduate level students and found they hold several misconceptions about CIs. Many believe there is a uniform likelihood distribut...
متن کاملTesting a Point Null Hypothesis against One-Sided for Non Regular and Exponential Families: The Reconcilability Condition to P-values and Posterior Probability
In this paper, the reconcilability between the P-value and the posterior probability in testing a point null hypothesis against the one-sided hypothesis is considered. Two essential families, non regular and exponential family of distributions, are studied. It was shown in a non regular family of distributions; in some cases, it is possible to find a prior distribution function under which P-va...
متن کاملConfidence Intervals as an Alternative to Significance Testing
The article argues to replace null hypothesis significance testing by confidence intervals. Correctly interpreted, confidence intervals avoid the problems associated with null hypothesis statistical testing. Confidence intervals are formally valid, do not depend on apriori hypotheses and do not result in trivial knowledge. The first part presents critique of null hypothesis significance testing...
متن کاملNull Hypothesis Significance Testing I Class 17 , 18 . 05 Jeremy Orloff and Jonathan Bloom 1 Learning Goals
Frequentist statistics is often applied in the framework of null hypothesis significance testing (NHST). We will look at the Neyman-Pearson paradigm which focuses on one hypothesis called the null hypothesis. There are other paradigms for hypothesis testing, but NeymanPearson is the most common. Stated simply, this method asks if the data is well outside the region where we would expect to see ...
